New Year's Eve Hike - Lewis Peak- Shenandoah National Park -December 31, 2021

What was a soupy, foggy morning in the valley opened up to a sunny, clear morning up in the mountains.  An inversion...lucky for us! Hike leaders Marit Anderson and Mark Perschel met up with 11 other hikers (and 2 "no shows") at Browns Gap on Skyline Drive at 9am on December 31.  The happy hikers included Lynn Hatch, Patrick Cory, Claire Cline, Nancy Handley, Paul Henderson, Linda Beights, Lisa and Molly Swales, John Brandt, Peggy Byrd, and Rosemary Eyre-Brook. We headed down the Madison Run Fire Road, out Rockytop Trail to Lewis Peak Trail with a nice long stop at the summit to enjoy the amazing views, eat lunch with chocolate chip cookies for dessert, and soak in the sunrays. The group returned the same route except to continue on Rockytop Trail to the Appalachian Trail, admiring some of the water bars on the AT created by PATC members from a fall trail maintenance event. We arrived at the parking lot at 2:15 pm with plenty of time to get home for New Year's Eve festivities. The mileage for the day was 9.4 miles. It was a fun way to say goodbye to 2021 and welcome in 2022!
