Hone Quarry - October 17, 2015
Iva Gillet led a group of enthusiastic hikers over to Hone Quarry for a colorful 4 1/2 mile hike in the Shenandoah Valley. Michael Seth joined the Charlottesville group who consisted of: Neil McKinney, Marian Styles, Andy Willgruber, Briana Taylor, Lisa Lamps and Max, Claire Cline, James McAdams, Wanda Hamlin, Bill Holman and first time hiker with us Tatjana Terzic. It was a marvelous fall day, with leaves changing as we drove through downtown Bridgewater during Bridgewater College’s homecoming. At the trailhead when we arrived there were some unusual items: an abandoned tent, various clothing articles, including a Batman shirt and a burned mattress. While this was very strange, but we pressed on, beginning our gradual ascent through the woods along a dry creek bed. We climbed for about a mile before the trail became steeper. The color of the leaves was lovely as we climbed and we could see the surrounding ridgelines. Upon arriving at a rock outcropping facing west the wind was stronger. Here we ate and enjoyed the view, then moved on after eating some of Trader Joe's best cookies. The trail followed the top of the ridge line and then gradually descended. On the way back to Charlottesville, most of us stopped at a roadside farm pumpkin display to purchase all size pumpkins for $1. Happy Fall!
