Walnut Creek Pre-Holiday Mental Health hike - December 23, 2017

submitted by Iva Gillet

We had an incredible turn-out for the Christmas weekend. With an afternoon forecast for rain, we keep it short and local and had several new hikers with us as a result! Our hiking veterans- Patrick Cory, Dave Borszich, Brian Muszynski, Nancy Handley, Jeanne Siler, and hike leaders Bill Holman and Iva Gillet (along with dogs Remi and Colt) were pleased to welcome occasional hikers Geoff Manning-Smith and Sunny Choi, and new hikers Bob Rottiers, Jennifer Mauller, Nancy, Courtney, Emma, and Molly Schlichting, along with Christine Yost and Skittles, Molly’s dog. Hiking counter-clockwise, we enjoyed the trail as it wound through the woods, slowly undulating over the terrain of this park in southern Albemarle. We crossed small streams and climbed moderate hills, taking breathers as desired. Patrick led most of the way, with Geoff following and they chose a peaceful spot on the edge of the lake for our snack. We shared cookies and dog treats, before completing our circuit. We could see the beach and lifeguard stands across the lake as we turned back toward the cars.  At the hike’s end, Nancy Handley shared a huge box of Lindt chocolates with us, and we all successfully headed off to our pre-holiday planning before the rain arrived. Hope the holidays are enjoyable.
